We have a long tradition and more than 20 years of experience in engineering magnetron sputtering systems on polymer and metal. With our range of skills from PVD sputtering to ALD, we provide solutions for various applications (decorative industry to active layer). It can deposit, for instance, metal or transparent insulating oxide (SiOx) protective layers.

Our customers benefit from the excellent performance of the coatings, the ability of our systems to handle complex geometry parts with a surface of up to 1 square meter and the use of several in-house magnetrons for the sputtering process.

Key components


Magnetron sputter sources generate a magnetic field-enhanced plasma discharge under low pressure and in Ar atmosphere. It is a physical vapor deposition (PVD) method of thin film deposition by sputtering. This involves ejecting material from a "target" that is a source onto any "substrate" polymer or metal. Adding reactive gases, such as N2 or O2, may further generate plasma-chemical reactions. Thin nitrides or oxides can be generated as thin layers in this way. Magnetron sputter sources enable the highly accurate deposition of complex compound layers on 2D or 3D parts.


Through selection of appropriate targets from a range of more than 40 and also the reactive gases, most decorative or functional layers can be manufactured at high rates and uniformity including:

From conception to production

Setting up
We set up the equipment in your premises, fitting in with your plant organization and the necessary utilities. (access to cooling water, gas) Depending on your environment we will look at the suitable class if a clean room is needed, and to make it as user-friendly as we can.

Case studies

Chromium VI Substitution

Chromium is a high performance material and is widely used as a wear and corrosion protective layer in many areas. Unfortunately, chromium electroplating has a huge drawback: the presence of chromium VI products that have been recognized as category 1 or 2 carcinogenic elements by the European Union. In addition, there is also the problem of environmental protection during the bath recycling process. Working closely with a leading and very demanding company using shiny protective chromium layer, Surcotec has designed and industrialised a complete equipment (process and deposition process) that successfully replaces the thick chromium plating with vacuum thin-film technologies. In reference to this great achievement, a patent has also been filed for the overall concept (machine and its specific process) in the target market.

LED Lighting

The recent development in LEDs have shown new generations of high-intensity diode, meaning lighting designers can no longer use simple collimators. They use reflectors to reflect the maximum intensity. In this perspective, Surcotec has designed a range of highly reflective coatings (> 94%) called Lumencoat that can be applied to various substrates such as glass, plastic, metal, ...

To withstand the conditions of use of this equipment, these coatings were tested to provide a premium product:

  • Tape cutter adhesion test (ASTM D3359-)
  • Abrasion test (MIL-C-675)
  • Reflectivity test using integrated sphere
  • Moisture test
  • Corrosion test (ISO-4538)

This coating process is fully industrialised (annual capacity of more than 3M parts in 50mm diameter for example) and has been validated by a global leader in this field.
